12 Years Ago Today… I Took Control

12 Years

July 24th is a day that I’ve always got circled on my calendar. It’s the anniversary of the day that I took my life back.

12 years ago today, I quit chewing tobacco. For nearly 18 years I chewed Kodiak, Skoal and Copenhagen on a daily basis… sometimes more than a can per day. Quitting was at the same time one of the most rewarding and most difficult things that I’ve ever done.

My wonderful wife Amanda has put up with me through all the withdrawal, the weight gain (I’m still fat) my hypochondriac tendencies and my general grumpiness (I’m still an asshole).

I’m proud to say that my kids have never really known me as a dipper. They know that Dad used to use that stuff and I’ve talked with them often about it, but I’m hoping that I’ve shown them the errors of my ways and they’ll think twice when (not if) they’re confronted with it.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t give special recognition to my family at KillTheCan.org. These are not my “Internet friends”. This group represents some of the greatest friends and compatriots I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting. I’m humbled by the support I’ve been shown over the years. They are truly brothers and sisters from another mother. Thank you.
