In Times Like These… music speaks to me. It’s been a while since I’ve done one of these music posts. Today seemed like a good day. There’s a lot going on in the world today. We’re nearly two years into COVID. We’re experiencing massive inflation, rising gas prices and supply chain issues that are most likely going to affect our holiday season. We’ve got millions of people leaving their jobs, social media sites going out of their way to pit friends against one another and politicians spinning every situation to fit their narrative. No wonder we have countless stadiums full of people chanting ‘Fuck Joe Biden‘ at the top of their lungs… this is the world we live in today. For the record… I don’t condone such behavior. Whether I agree with a President or not, he still is our President and if nothing else, the office deserves respect. I felt the same during the previous administration and voted for neither person. On a somewhat related note, that song ‘Let’s Go Brandon’ is pretty damn catchy 😉
In any case… when I get a case of the Mundays that seems to last for days or weeks… I turn to music. A buddy of mine recently posted this song to his Facebook timeline (something else I have issues with but that’s another post for another time) and it got me really thinking about this song that I love.
Times Like These – Foo Fighters
I, I’m a one way motorway
I’m the one that drives away, follows you back home
I, I’m a street light shining
I’m a white light blinding bright, burning off and on
Uh-huh
It’s times like these you learn to live again
It’s times like these you give and give again
It’s times like these you learn to love again
It’s times like these time and time again
I, I’m a new day rising
I’m a brand new sky to hang the stars upon tonight
But I, I’m a little divided
Do I stay or run away and leave it all behind?
Uh-huh
It’s times like these you learn to live again
It’s times like these you give and give again
It’s times like these you learn to love again
It’s times like these time and time again
It’s times like these you learn to live again
It’s times like these you give and give again
It’s times like these you learn to love again
It’s times like these time and time again
It’s times like these you learn to live again
It’s times like these you give and give again
It’s times like these you learn to love again
It’s times like these time and time again
It’s times like these you learn to live again
It’s times like these you give and give again
It’s times like these you learn to love again
It’s times like these time and time again
According to WikiPedia, the song discusses how, “Dave Grohl felt “like I wasn’t entirely myself” during the three-month hiatus the Foo Fighters entered following the tense and unsatisfying first recording sessions for One by One, as well as his uncertainty about the future of the band.” I’ve got a ton of uncertainty in my life as well right now so that’s probably why this speaks to me.
To me, this is a song about hope. It’s about introspection and bringing things back to basics and caring about what’s really important, something that I find myself not doing often enough.
There are a BUNCH of incredible versions of this song (which I’ll link to below) but this one here is probably my personal favorite. Dave and his guitar… it’s perfect.
Here’s a couple other versions I really enjoy as well:
- Foo Fighters ~ Times Like These (Reading Festival 2012)
- Live Lounge Allstars – Times Like These (BBC Radio 1 Stay Home Live Lounge)
If you’re like me and this pandy (which is my favorite way to refer to the pandemic these days) is taking a toll I’d urge you to take a step back, turn off some of the noise and re-evaluate. It’s been helpful for me. Here’s hoping you’re happy and healthy.
