July 24th is the day on my mental calendar that stands out more than any other (with the exception of our anniversary and Thanksgiving).
It is the day I took my life back from my addiction.
It’s the day I quit chewing tobacco.
20 Years Free From Nicotine
20 Years. Two decades. TWENTY YEARS ago this morning.
I spit out my last dip (Kodiak for anyone wondering).
Since that morning, absolutely nothing.
No dip, no chew, no cigarettes, no cigars, no nicotine pouches, no vaping. Nothing.
With the exception of my relationships with family and friends it is the thing I’m most proud of in my life.
These days, there’s a slew of ‘influencers’ trying to convince you how good nicotine it for you. You’ll see ‘expert’ after expert telling you the benefits outweigh he negatives.
If this is something you have struggled with I am always open to talk about my experiences. I can promise you you’re not alone in your struggles.
This serves as my yearly shoutout to my incredible support network at KillTheCan.org. Without that group that provides accountability and brotherhood, I would absolutely still be consumed by my addiction. Saying ‘thank you’ will never be enough, but I can’t think of anything more impactful. Thank you.
Special thanks to my wife for putting up with me… not just through years of being a nicotine addict but for dealing with me (I’m a handful).
I continue to be in awe of what she’s able to accomplish. She’s the undisputed head of our family. She’s a massively successful business owner (Amanda Bellan Photography) and the best partner a guy could ever ask for. Love you Mama.
Three Years For Dad
As if July 24th didn’t mean enough to me…
Three years ago it gained additional importance.
Today marks the 3 year anniversary of my Father’s death. Cancer took him from us… and in a weird sort of way this was his final gift to me… a reminder why I fight my personal battle against nicotine and tobacco.
Love you Dad… and I miss you terribly. FUCK CANCER.
