The Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles is finding new and inventive ways to piss me off. Apparently it’s not good enough that I’ve got to go down there very couple of years to deal with some clerk that’s so irritated that she needs to do her job that she makes it her personal goal to ruin my day as well. It’s not good enough that once every two years I’ve got to take time out of my day (only from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM) to get an E-Check. Nope, now they’ve got a new scheme — Proof Of Insurance Coverage!!!
To make a long story short, the are requiring proof that I had had liability insurance for my vehicle as of a certain date. If anyone’s interested (which I highly doubt) this is Ohio law O.R.C. 4509.101. The exact verbiage on the notice is, “You have been randomly selected to verify that you have coverage for the vehicle listed above”. So, I’ve got to go to the trouble of copying my insurance card and sending it to them. Keep in mind that there is no “virtual” way of doing this so I’ve got to find a stamp (don’t even get me started on the “Forever Stamps”) and take this thing to the post office to get it done. This was a minor irritation but I really had no problem taking care of it…
UNTIL…
Last week I received a notice from the BMV thanking me for my cooperation. “The information provided was satisfactory and no suspension will be established.” Gee, thanks for your kind words. Here’s where it gets good. In the next piece of mail, we get ANOTHER request for verification not on the my vehicle but on my wife’s!!! Now remember, this is a “random selection” of drivers in the great state of Ohio. What are the chances?!?!?
In any case, its time for the entire process to start over again. I can only hope that I don’t get one of these for the Power Wheels that my son got for Christmas. All in due time I suppose.
You will have to prove that those Power Wheels are safe for your children and are not covered in lead paint.
Argghh…. forgot about that!!!
Just as a follow up to this… I received a letter in the mail the other day from the BMV in response to my SECOND random check. We’re good to go on that one too.
We’ll see how long we go before I get another “random” checkup… stay tuned.
