The 406 Northlane Move Out Letter

406 Northlane Front DoorFor Throwback Thursday I wanted to share something that I recovered when I was removing some stuff from the server where this site was originally hosted. This is the letter that we received the day we finally moved out of 406. Looking back at it now it’s certainly not something I’m proud of, but it definitely brings back some very vivid, and dare I say outstanding, memories.

On a side note, our landlady Rachel passed away a few years ago. Nicest lady you’d ever want to meet. RIP Rachel.

RE: NORTHLANE 406 BRADLEY, WES, CHAD, GREGORY & MATT

THIS CONDO WAS REALLY BAD I WAS VERY SURPRISED YOU GUYS LEFT ME SO BAD. NOTHING WAS CLEANED TRASH EVERYWHERE ON ALL THREE LEVELS PLUS DECK. HOLES IN THE WALLS, WRITING ON THE WALLS, I HAD TO DISPOSE OF THINGS YOU GUYS DIDN’T WANT, DESK IN MASTER BEDROOM, MIRROR, LOTS OF PAPER & ETC. THE LARGE LETTERS ON THE WALL IN THE BASEMENT THAT SAID HAPPY HALLOWEEN & RITA OTHER WRITING IN DIFFERENT AREAS. I HAD TO BUY TWO GALLONS OF KILZ TO TRY TO COVER IT, I HAD A VERY HARD TIME. ALL BASEBOARDS HAD TO BE CLEANED BEFORE PAINTING. MICHAEL’S MOTHER WAS VERY UPSET THE WAY THIS CONDO WAS LEFT, IMAGINE HOW I FELT. I THOUGHT YOU GUYS WOULD NOT HAVE LEFT THE MES AND DAMAGE FOR ME. I THOUGHT ALOT OF YOU GUYS AND THOUGHT YOU DID ME. ENCLOSED YOU WILL FIND THE RESULTS AND THE MONEY I HAD TO PAY OUT THIS DOES NOT INCLUDE ALL THE TIME I SPENT CLEANING AND GOING TO GET THINGS THAT WERE NEEDED TO GET THIS CONDO BACK TO THE CONDITION IT SHOULD BE TO RENT AGAIN. THIS CONDO WAS NOT NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR IT WAS VERY MUCH A DISASTER.

Good luck to you all.
Rachel

  1. Wanted to add this comment that Pip left when this was posted to FB because I couldn’t have said it better myself:

I have to admit, i’m torn on this one. I haven’t read this in years, and my reaction this time is a little different than the last. The me who wants to go back to college for a weekend can’t stop laughing at things like “food on the ceiling” and “knobs missing off medicine cabinets”. I want to know the legit story someone could tell about why there was a decision made to remove knobs from multiple medicine cabinets. A lot of what we did actually had purpose. We wrote our friend’s mom’s name on the wall in bleach so it would glow at parties. We put highlighters in liquor bottles and screwed them up into the ceiling in front of black lights. We were pioneers…

The me who is has grown up a little since then feels really bad about this. Rachel really was (RIP) the nicest lady you could’ve hoped to have as a landlord in a college condo and we completely hosed her. She didn’t exaggerate in the slightest, we left that thing in a state that would have warranted a government-sanctioned quarantine. We left a soda machine in the living room because it was too heavy to move. You couldn’t walk on the carpet without kicking up years of cigarette ashes. I honestly think i have dreams about living in that mess again, and while it was fun at the time it would be nothing short of a nightmare today. That being said, of all the people who did live there (not to mention the many who came to visit) we only had 3 actually cleaning up the place at the very end. Honestly, it was worth paying the extra money to not have to deal with it.

I think overall I still feel it’s somewhat charming. Right or wrong, it’s a memory of a more carefree time and I seem to enjoy those more as the years go on. I mean c’mon, you can’t be a landlord to a bunch of college dudes (and two lovely ladies) over a series of years and not expect this kind of thing. Still, I might feel a little better about it if Rachel had been a huge asshole.

  2. I’ve visited this site from time to time over the years. I believe Pip and I have even emailed a time or two. My roommates and I were the lucky ones to inherit 406 Northlane the year you all moved out. I think we even met a few of you during a walk through with Rachel (RIP). I remember Rachel telling us about the carnage that took place there. Funny thing is, she didn’t seem upset about the condition or repairs needed. My roommates and I lived at 526 Northlane prior to moving down to 406. It’s great to walk down memory lane, and see this little corner of Bloomington. If you ever open up a picture/memory section for other residents, let me know. Would love to contribute. FYI, there were glow in the dark stars on the basement ceiling. They remained there even after we moved out a couple years later.
